House sitting for a Smallholding
House sitting for a smallholding is significantly more involved than a standard house sit. It’s less about "sitting" and more about stewardship. You aren't just watching a home; you are managing a small ecosystem.Whether you’re the owner or the sitter, here is how to handle the unique demands of a rural homestead.
The Dawn Patrol: Letting out poultry (chickens, ducks, geese) and checking that everyone survived the night (predator check).
The Headcount: Every morning and evening, we check to see every animal. A sheep stuck in a briar or a goat that hasn't moved for hours, for example, is an immediate priority.
Water Security: This is the most critical task. Troughs can leak, freeze, or get fouled. Fresh water is the difference between a happy animal and a crisis.
The Lockdown: Ensuring all gates are latched and "fox-proof" coops are sealed before dusk.
